About the event

In feudal Japan, a rōnin was a samurai who had no master. Viewed as a ‘wanderer’ or ‘a person of the waves (unrestrained),’ rōnin was someone who ‘found the way without belonging to one place.’ On November 3rd 2023 John G. Walsh created the rōnin challenge. He ‘wandered’ the Waterford Greenway from Waterford City to Dungarvan and back, a distance of 93.6km, in 7 hours, 52 minutes and 34 seconds -this is The Benchmark The rōnin challenge is to traverse the Greenway, there and back in under 8 hours (that’s approximately a 5 minute per kilometer pace). All participants are required to be in a relay team. Teams have to be a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of 16 people. All money raised will go to Waterford Hospice Foundation.
